Each student is required to carry out a final assignment that is worth 15 ECTS credits: a research project for those students who have chosen the pathway for Research and Advanced Academic Training and an in-company placement for those students who have chosen the Professional pathway.
The student is to present a proposal for the final assignment, which must be approved by the Coordination Committee of the Master's program and the student's academic advisor.
To meet degree requirements, students in both pathways will prepare a final report on their assignment and make an oral presentation.
As an exception, there will be two rounds for final assignment defences in the academic year 2006/07: July and September. The timetable and procedures for each round will be published in a timely fashion.
- PROPOSAL PROCEDURE FOR THE RESEARCH PROJECT (the final assignment for those students choosing the pathway Research and Advanced Academic Training): The Project is to be carried out under the supervision of a professor in the Faculty of Mathematics. The student is required to present a proposal providing personal information and a brief description of the proposed project. The proposal must be signed off by the project director. In the academic year 2006/07, the deadline for submitting the proposal to the Secretary of the Faculty of Mathematics is before 28 February 2007. It will subsequently be published in the list of projects approved by the Coordination Committee.
- PROPOSAL PROCEDURE FOR THE IN-COMPANY PLACEMENT (the final assignment for those students choosing the Professional pathway): The Placement is to be carried out in collaboration with the company or institution involved, under a supervisor who works for the company or institution. The student is required to present a proposal providing personal information and a brief description of the proposed work and objectives to be fulfilled. The proposal must be delivered to the Secretary of the Faculty of Mathematics before the start of the placement. Once the proposal receives approval from the Coordination Committee, an agreement of collaboration will be signed between the company and the University of Barcelona.

Pre-enrolment for the first round
Between 18 and 20 June 2007, students who are enrolled in the course Final Assignment in the Research and Advanced Academic Training pathway must notify the Secretary of the Faculty of Mathematics if they wish to defend their research project in the first round. If they fail to do so, they may only present their defence in the second round.
Written presentation of final assignments in the first round
Before 28 June 2007, students appearing in the first round must deliver three copies of their research project to the Secretary of the Faculty of Mathematics, together with the report of the project director, using the standard form provided or a similar one. All documentation must be delivered in a sealed envelope addressed to the Chair of the assigned examining committee.
Pre-enrolment for the second round
Between 3 and 7 September 2007, students who are enrolled in the course Final Assignment in the Research and Advanced Academic Training pathway must notify the Secretary of the Faculty of Mathematics if they wish to defend their research project in the second round. If they fail to do so, they thereby renounce defence of their project in the academic year 2006/07. Students who have presented their defence in the first round but failed to pass can present their project again in the second round.
Written presentation of research projects in the second round
By 15 September 2007, students appearing in the second round must deliver three copies of their research project to the Secretary of the Faculty of Mathematics, together with the report of the project director, using the standard form provided or a similar one. All documentation must be delivered in a sealed envelope addressed to the Chair of the assigned examining committee.
Oral defence of the project
The oral defence of the project will take place at a date and time set by the assigned examining committee within a calendar period set by the Master's programme for each round. The information will be provided to students and made public in a timely fashion. Students will have up to thirty minutes to defend their projects publicly and demonstrate the knowledge they have attained. The members of the examining committee will then have up to fifteen minutes to pose questions and enter into dialogue with students in order to test their attainment of the subject-specific and core generic competences required of students taking this pathway.
Awarding of grades
After all the project defences have been made in each round, the examining committee will award grades and enter these into the student transcripts under the course unit Final Assignment.
