General information
In Spain, the new European university system being introduced as part of the work of the European Higher Education Area organizes undergraduate and postgraduate studies in three cycles:
- The new first cycle is where all university students start, and it refers to the undergraduate studies you need to complete to be awarded a bachelor’s degree. In Spain, this new structure is in the process of replacing the old system, which divided undergraduate studies in two stages. In retrospect, the new terminology can initially be confusing for some people here because those two stages were also called ‘cycles’ and were referred to as ‘first-cycle undergraduate studies’ and ‘second-cycle undergraduate studies’. That old system is still present, but fewer degree courses are being offered and it is in the process of being phased out.
- The second cycle corresponds to postgraduate degree courses and master’s degree courses, and is considered as the first part of what are called ‘postgraduate studies’. Some students complete this part and then stop studying, and others go on to complete the second part, referred to as the third cycle (see below).
- The third cycle comprises the student’s doctoral studies and their preparation of a doctoral thesis.
The Faculty of Mathematics’ Official Postgraduate Program (POP) offers the following second- and third-cycle degree courses:
- the master’s degree Advanced and Professional Mathematics;
- the master’s degree Artificial Intelligence, an interuniversity degree course delivered jointly with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and Rovira i Virgili University (URV);
- the doctoral degree Mathematics.
Some of our faculty teaching staff also teach in the following master’s degree courses:
- the master’s degree Pure and Applied Logic;
- the master’s degree History of Science: Science, History and Society.
